Not All Weight Gain Is Fat … And Pushing Harder Can Make It Worse!

If your body changes quickly… it isn’t what you think or have been told.

Bodies don’t typically go up multiple sizes in a short period of time from fat accumulation.

But fluid?

Fluid definitely does this. And this is actually common with post-infectious conditions.

After infections, the inner lining of your blood vessels can become inflamed and irritated from being attacked. Instead of staying tight and regulated, those vessel linings can become more porous.

And when that happens, fluid leaks out into your tissues.

That fluid has weight (think gallons of milk heavy filling up your tissues)

So suddenly, your body changes. And it can feel like it happened overnight.

Your clothes don’t fit.

Your shoes feel tight.

Rings won’t go on.

Your face and body look different.

You feel swollen… heavy… unfamiliar.

Like you’re carrying something that doesn’t belong there.

Because you are.

This Isn’t “Just Weight Gain”

The sad part is that most people won’t recognize this for what it is.

They’ll call it weight gain.

They’ll tell you to:

Eat less.

Exercise more.

Try harder.

So you do.

You push a body that is already under stress.

You restrict when your system actually needs support.

And instead of getting better… things can get worse.

Because this isn’t a fat problem.

You can’t out-diet or out-exercise a fluid and circulation issue.

What’s Actually Happening

Post-infectious conditions don’t just “go away” once the initial illness passes.

They can leave behind ongoing inflammation and immune disruption (affecting delicate systems like the lining of your blood vessels).

These linings are meant to be tight and protective.

But when they’re inflamed, they can become more permeable, allowing fluid to shift out into surrounding tissues.

This isn’t vascular failure.

It’s a system that’s been irritated, disrupted, and is trying to recover.

The Missing Piece: Your Gut

For many people, this doesn’t start with the blood vessels.

It starts in the gut.

Post-infectious gut dysfunction can compromise the gut barrier, allowing toxins, microbial byproducts, and inflammatory compounds to leak into the bloodstream.

Once those substances are circulating, they can further irritate and trigger inflammation in blood vessel linings, contributing to that “leaky,” porous state.

* This is something I go deeper into in my other post on gut barrier disruption and toxin leakage (you can check it out here: https://drrachaellarson.com/blog/what-if-many-long-covid-post-infectious-symptoms-are-coming-from-your-gut).

So what you’re experiencing isn’t random.

It’s a connected chain reaction:

Gut disruption → toxins entering circulation → vascular inflammation → fluid leaking into tissues

It’s Not Just About Size

These fluid shifts don’t just change how your body looks. They can also affect how it functions.

When circulation and fluid balance are off, it impacts how oxygen and nutrients move through the body.

For some people, this can show up as:

  • Temperature dysregulation

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Dysautonomia or POTS-like symptoms

  • That heavy, full, pressured feeling in the body

These symptoms can feel separate, but they often share the same root.

Why “Doing More” Can Backfire

When your body is in this state, pushing harder isn’t always the answer.

Over-exercising can add more stress to a system already struggling with regulation.

Restricting food can deprive your body of what it needs to repair and stabilize.

So instead of improving… your body holds on tighter.

Not because it’s working against you. But because it’s trying to protect you.

This Can Change

Here’s what most people aren’t told:

This isn’t necessarily permanent.

These blood vessels aren’t “broken”. They’re inflamed and reacting to ongoing stress signals in the body.

As healing happens (especially at the level of the gut, and inflammed vessel walls) things can begin to shift.

Fluid balance improves.

Circulation improves.

And the weight that once felt stuck… can start to move.

You Don’t Have to Piece This Together Alone

Post-infectious conditions often leave people navigating fragmented care, confusing symptoms, and oftentimes with no where to turn.

If you’re dealing with unexplained weight changes, gut issues, or ongoing post-infectious symptoms, I offer consulting to help you make sense of it all. https://drrachaellarson.com/book-consultation

Together, we can connect the dots, explore treatment strategies, and build a more cohesive path forward, one that actually supports your body’s healing.

You don’t have to figure this out alone.
